Autism New Zealand has formed a nationwide alliance with three other major charities and a leading winery in a fundraising initiative which is believed to be a first for New Zealand.
Spencer Hill Estate Winery, producers of Tasman Bay and Latitude 41 wines, has produced a new range called “Compassion” with 100% of the profits from sales to be donated to the Compassion Alliance. The charities who will benefit are Autism NZ, Alzheimer’s NZ, MS Society of NZ and Women’s Refuge NZ.
Each wine has been created specifically for the Compassion range and are designed to offer buyers excellent quality at a reasonable price.
Chief Executive of Autism New Zealand, Alison Molloy, said “These days it is unrealistic for charities to expect to be supported solely by the generosity of donors and the whims of government and we have to find ways to offer something of value in exchange for the public’s dollar. I think New Zealanders will love the combination of receiving excellent quality wines at a very reasonable price while benefiting such good causes.”
The wines are available to purchase online at www.compassionwine.com
THOMAS AND FRIENDS™ Unite With Autism New Zealand to Help Raise Awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism New Zealand Inc. has announced a partnership with the world’s number 1 pre-school property Thomas & FriendsTM. The charity has joined forces with HIT Entertainment, one of the world’s leading independent children’s entertainment producers and rights owners, and Australian/New Zealand Agent, Haven Licensing, to help raise awareness about autism. This follows on from similar partnerships the famous children’s entertainment icon has formed with autism organisations around the world.
Research studies conducted in both Australia and the UK have demonstrated that many children with autism have a particular love of Thomas & Friends who is celebrating his 65th anniversary this year! Results from a survey of parents of children with autism, commissioned by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) mirror that of a similar survey conducted by the National Autistic Society (NAS) in the UK. Findings for both studies revealed children with autism like Thomas & Friends more than any other children’s programme due to the characters’ clear facial expressions, which make them easy to identify. Parents also reported that Thomas & Friends helped their children understand the feelings and emotions of others which is an important step in assisting these children with developing social interaction skills and engaging with people around them.
“HIT Entertainment, Haven Licensing and Thomas & Friends are delighted to have the opportunity to work together to support Autism New Zealand and it’s endeavours and to build on the wonderful relationship Thomas has formed with other autism associations in the UK, Australia and HK,” said Mr Tom Punch, Managing Director of Haven Licensing, Licensing Agent for Thomas & Friends in Australia and New Zealand.
Autism New Zealand Inc Chief Executive, Alison Molloy, says, “This is a wonderful opportunity for Autism NZ to generate greater awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorders through an icon in children’s entertainment. We know children with autism relate particularly to Thomas, and now we have the chance to build on that relationship.”

Shine a light for Autism
Autism New Zealand is delighted to announce we have teamed with Candles of New Zealand to create the official Autism Candle. The aim of the candle is to help raise awareness and funds for the organization, but we also hope that the candle becomes a symbol of light for all those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.
The candle itself is handcrafted in New Zealand, using 100% natural soy wax, a pure cotton wick and is infused with Coconut & Lime. The candle was inspired by Ollie, 5, pictured on the label, who was diagnosed with ASD a couple of years ago. Ollie is the son of Nicola and Steven Farrant, owners and operators of Candles of New Zealand and creators of this stunning candle.
Candles of New Zealand will donate $8 from every candle sold to Autism New Zealand Inc. Buy yours now - for you, for your friends and family, for those that support you, as a wonderful gift. The candles can be purchased from the Autism New Zealand bookstore, Flicker Candle Emporium - www.flickercandles.co.nz or from Stevens Homeware Stores nationwide.
Many of us have celebrations - such as weddings, birthdays or anniversaries - which we want to share with our family and friends. But sometimes we don't need or even want presents.
Gift with a Difference means you can ask your family or friends to make a donation to Autism New Zealand instead of giving a present.
Simply let everyone you know and ask them to make a donation to Autism New Zealand in celebration of your special day. We can even provide specially designed donation slips to be sent out or given to friends if you would like.
For more information, contact Autism New Zealand National Office on (04) 470 7616 or email info@autismnz.org.nz.

Payroll Giving
On 7 January 2010 the government brought in a system called Payroll Giving to make it easier for people wanting to donate to a charity. Payroll Giving allows you to make donations to charities and receive an immediate tax credit instead of having to retain your receipts and wait until the end of the tax year.
Payroll giving, where offered by your employer, gives you the opportunity to donate to approved donee organisations (Autism New Zealand Inc. is an approved done organisation) direct from your pay and receive immediate tax credits that reduce your PAYE payable. You don't need to wait until the end of the year to claim your tax credit.
Tax credits for payroll donations are calculated at 33.33 cents for each dollar donated which is deducted from you PAYE. This means that if you give $10.00 your net pay will only be reduced by $6.67 with the remainder coming from the tax you would otherwise be paying.
To set this up and give regularly to Autism New Zealand there are just two steps:
1/ Ask your employer if they are offering Payroll Giving (it is voluntary for employers as well as employees). If they are then check that they are happy for you to give to Autism New Zealand.
2/ Just print and complete a copy of the “Payroll Giving Request Form” and give it to your employer.
If you would like any further information either look on http://www.ird.govt.nz/news-updates/like-to-know-payroll-giving.html or call Autism New Zealand National Office on (04) 470 7616.
