As of April 2011 we took the decision to combine both the younger and older groups. This means that the programme is now available for children 8-21 years of age on both a Tuesday and Thursday.
Information:
These groups are designed specifically for children and teenagers with an Aspergers Syndrome diagnosis. The groups are designed for children between the ages of 8 and 21 years of age. The group was originally based at Christchurch East School, but following a successful programme at Phillipstown School in the Summer of 2010 the decision was made to switch the programme to Phillipstown. However, since earthquake damage in February 2011 the decision was taken to run the programme from the Autism New Zealand Library.
On average there are approximately 9 participants each day on this programme, with the group generally staffed on a 1:3 or 1:4 (staff:child) ratio.
These programmes are designed to enable continuity for children during the school holidays whilst also providing valuable respite care for parents. They usually involve higher functioning activities such as go karting, day trips to Hanmer Springs, rock climbing and skiing.
Participants on the Aspergers programmes also have the option of attending the Autism Programmes on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday should they wish to do so.
Each programmes run from 10am until 3pm, unless a specific trip is planned, and are designed to get the children to undertake activities which put them into a social environment as well as learning and developing new skills.

Please note that this programme has been approved by Child, Youth & Family in January 2010 and approval is valid through until January 2012
