Picture Exchange Communication System Advanced Training Workshop

PART 1: PECS Review, Practice, and Problem Solving
"PECS Review, Practice and Problem Solving" focuses on a thorough review of how to implement PECS. Topics include a review of the most common implementation problems, discrimination difficulties and cutting edge problem solving strategies. Participants will practice their PECS skills under the guidance of a Pyramid consultant, troubleshoot their own implementation issues and watch video examples of PECS lessons in action. We encourage participants to share their successful and difficult cases. Our aim is to respond to these cases in a manner that does not simply "fix" the situation but results in problem solving strategies. We welcome videotapes of participants implementing PECS. Please contact us in advance if you would like us to review your tape at the training session.

PART 2: Incorporating PECS Across the Day
While it can initially be implemented within a structured setting, the successful use of PECS is dependent on the student's being expected to, and being able to, communicate across the entire day within both structured and incidental formats. This presentation describes strategies for incorporating PECS across an entire day within functional contexts with expectations for the student to use language beyond single picture requests. Specifically, "Advanced" PECS lessons that teach a variety of linguistic concepts and syntactical structures are described. Selection of appropriate targets, creation of functional lessons, and strategies for incorporating PECS within all activities are discussed. All participants must have previously attended a PECS Basic Training (2-Day) Workshop.
