Craig Smith - Deputy Principal of the Aspect Hunter School for Children with Autism in Newcastle, New South Wales.
Craig works for Autism Spectrum Australia as Deputy Principal of the Aspect Hunter School for Children with Autism in Newcastle, New South Wales. He conducts educational outreach programs across the Hunter Region and regional New South Wales, coordinates positive behaviour support and emotional regulation programs, and implements Aspect Practice ‘iPad Model Classes'.
Craig is a PhD candidate in Special Education at the University of Newcastle and regularly presents at national and international education and research conferences, most recently presenting workshops for the United Nations in Shanghai as part of a global accessibility initiative as Australia’s autism innovation representative. Craig presents primarily on topics related to autism pedagogy, the utilisation of special interests in the classroom, universal design for learning and the implementation of technology.
Craig sits on the University of Newcastle's Special Education Advisory Board, was awarded the 2011 Elizabeth Hoyles Research Fellowship, was made an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2013, has featured on ABC Radio National as a national expert in autism education, and was one of thirty Australian educators selected for the '2015 Hot List' of inspiring teachers as published by The Educator magazine.
Craig is the author of a number of best selling education textbooks, including the popular ‘Minecraft In Your Classroom’ and ‘The iPad Model Classroom’, as well as online learning courses such as ‘Exploring your Emotions, Inside and Out’ which was selected as one of the top five global iTunes U learning courses for 2015'.
